Film classification: Helping you make informed viewing choices!
helps parents make informed choices for their children. It can also prove useful to adults. On our web site, you will find the story outline of recently classified films and the reasons behind the classification they were assigned.
Going to the movies? Forewarned is forearmed!
Thanks to the Régie du cinéma
, you can easily find out in which category the film you’re planning to see — or taking your children to see — has been classified. You’ll find this classification in newspapers and at the entrance to movie theatres, so you can buy your tickets knowingly.
It is also important to know that theatre operators and their employees must check that young viewers are of the required age for the classification category of the movie they plan to see.
Home theatres: Look for the sticker
When choosing a film to rent or buy, the sticker issued by the Régie and affixed on the product informs you of that film’s classification. By law, every video or DVD is required to bear such a sticker.
In addition to the film’s classification, the sticker also confirms that the film has been examined, that it is marketed by a distributor properly licensed by the Régie, and that this distributor is the owner of the film’s distribution rights.
When renting a video…
As with movie theatres, video rental outlet operators and employees must check the age of consumers renting or buying a film. They must also put films containing explicit sex scenes and any advertisement for such films in a separate section, specifically reserved for this purpose.
Our Inspection and Investigation Department: To enforce the law and protect consumers
The Régie du cinéma’s Inspection and Investigation Department
sees to it that movie theatres and retail outlets comply with the Act’s provisions regarding the exhibition of films to the public on their premises.
